Cruise 2022 – Madeira

Friday 7th January – At Sea

Yesterday the captain told us to expect rough seas, he wasn't joking! We are just leaving the English Channel heading round towards the Bay of Biscay and being tossed around on literally 20 - 30 foot waves. It's not too bad for us passengers. We can sit and watch the waves and comment on their size as the bows lift out of the water and crash down into the next wave with a thump. But it makes life so difficult for the crew, it's hard work moving around without falling over.
The passengers that joined us yesterday were all sent an email saying they could cancel if they wished as the covid problems on board this ship were serious. I think they are having problems due to crew members having to isolate. Some seem to be working incredibly hard to maintain the standard yet they, mostly Filipinos, keep so polite and cheerful.

I met the other members of my 'social bubble' last night. Jane, Lyn, Margaret and Anne. They are a cheery bunch, good company in fact so no complaints on my posting. Three of us went to the show then a quiz in the bar. Scored a massive 10 out of 15 questions mainly thanks to the other two. A good laugh though.

There are several talks on today that sound good. One is being given by the "Ocean Wildlife Encounters" team who normally patrol the decks recording sightings and providing information. I'm not too sure about sitting in a lecture theatre though, I may wait and see if the seas calm a bit first.

There are also ukulele lessons. I might try that.

Captain's just said it's force 10 wind and the storm will last through the notorious Bay of Biscay but should all be calm by tomorrow morning. I'm staggering off to get a coffee. The maid wants to do the room.
