Cruise 2023 – South America

Sunday: 8th Jan 2023 – At Sea

We are now heading out towards The Azores in the mid-Atlantic, you can just about see the small island specks in the image above. We are told that the sea is 14,760 feet deep here, a depth more than three times the height of Ben Nevis!

We had two days and two nights of very rough seas, but thankfully it seems much calmer now, even though the waves are still 5m high and the wind is force 5.

During the very bad weather the decks were locked off, so not much chance of a photo opportunity, but last night in one particularly violent movement of the ship I noticed that the large vase of flowers, and my glass of whisky were both quickly sliding off the table in my cabin.

My reaction was to dive with both hands outstretched and I caught both in mid-air, without spilling a drop! As I sat on the floor with a vase of flowers in one hand and my whisky in the other, how I wished the achievement could have been recorded. But alas no, you’ll just have to believe me.

We are now due to arrive at Horta in the Azores at 7:30am on Tuesday where the weather forecast is 15deg and sunny. That will be nice.

Horta is a small sheltered port where throughout sailing history, transatlantic sailors have been able to rest, replenish supplies and prepare for the second part of their voyage.

Nice pic on U Tube of you playing in a session at Whitby last year. Any folkies on your ship?

Just in case you were worrying, Long Mike has joined us to play guitar at the Wickstead. His debut was most satisfactory, but as a consequence it will be necessary for you to reapply for your old position and undergo a rigorous audition upon your return.

You’re a natural wordsmith Alan! I’m looking forward to the next instalment. Sounds as though you’ve already found your sea-legs too…..😁

Thanks Chris & Bill. I can at last report that we are indeed now enjoying “Calm seas and a happy ride”. (Also thank you “Google Translate”)

Ah, yes. It wasn’t what I first thought – though I’m sure flatulence CAN be lucky!

Really envious Alan, have a great adventure.

A rare opportunity to boast almost non existent knowledge of German language, following your Atlantic storm and superb cabin fielding activity wish you “Meeresstelle und gluckliche Farht”

    Good luck Chris and Bill
