Cruise 2023 – South America

Fri 10th Feb 2023: Porto Chacabuco, Chile

Woke up this morning expecting to be anchored outside Chacabuco. The ships engines had stopped.

I threw open the curtains and was greeted with this view:

Then an announcement: There had been an incident in the channel ahead and there were sightings of dropped fishing gear, nets and cables. It could be serious if this tangles in our propeller, so we needed to wait for the way to be cleared before approaching the port.

About an hour later we had the news that we couldn’t wait any longer so our visit was cancelled. Instead we would proceed to Punta Arenas in the Magellan Straits, and stay overnight there.

The day that followed brought amazing views as we meandered through the fjords and islands, but we were now on our way south towards Punta Arenus.

PS: My laptop is still on GMT, so when it says I posted it at 2:41 on Tuesday, it is actually 11:41 on Monday here, so for me Tuesday still is tomorrow. (Is that like the song: “When its Night Time in Italy, its Wednesday Over Here”?)
    Just thought I’d clarify that.

    Hi Haydn.
Its difficult to keep the blog updated at present, so much to write up but so much going on too. I’ve had a fantastic day in Punta Arenas today, that’s another story to tell.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) at about 11:30 – GMT, we are rounding Cape Horn.
We are due to get down to the Antarctic on Friday and spend 3 days there! The planned locations look great, just hope the weather is kind to us.
I’m not sure that I could make the Pole and back on my skis in those three days and I wouldn’t want the ship to leave me behind so I think I’ll give the actual Pole a miss.
    All the best. Alan

Great blog Alan. What an amazing experience for you and brilliantly described and photographed. When do you reach the Pole !!
    Continued bon voyage,
    Haydn
