Cruise 2023 – South America

Fri Feb 17th 2023: Part 2 – Lemaire Channel

I stayed out on deck most of the day, just admiring the scenery in this Antarctic wonderland. I took lots of photos, but nothing could preserve the full sensation of that experience.

As the sun fell lower in the sky we reached the Lemaire Channel.

We passed several penguin colonies. Most of the dots in the picture below are penguins.

As we came to the end of the Lemaire channel the ship suddenly turned sharp right, to rejoin the main channel and begin our journey back North.

By this time I was in the ship’s observation bar enjoying the view, the warmth and a bottle of Adnam’s Ghost Ship.

I realised that this point would almost certainly be the furthest South that we would travel and managed to record the location on my phone. Our latitude was -65.11 deg, just outside the Antarctic circle and (a message for Murray) no doubt the furthest south any other O5O club member has travelled – so far!

Although we had reached the most southerly point on our travels, we still had two more days, and several places to visit in Antarctica.
