Cruise 2025 – Around the World

Jan 6th 2025 – Departure

I have embarked on my journey around the world. The stresses of preparation, packing, and last-minute panics over what I might have forgotten are behind me. I’m in my cabin, comfortable and relaxed, with a tinge of excitement about the adventures that lie ahead.

After a few early delays yesterday due to slushy roads and minor flooding, the journey down to Southampton went very well, especially with the good company of my driver, who had a fascinating life story. I was then quickly processed through the port checks, accompanied by the delightful tunes of a three-piece group playing classics like “Over the Rainbow” and “Around the World in 80 Days,” bringing occasional smiles to the travel-weary faces.

My Home for the Next Four Months
The View from the Balcony

I keep seeing familiar faces from previous cruises, giving the impression that they are permanently onboard (perhaps they are!). At my allocated dinner table for six, there’s Christine, who was on my table last time, Margaret, also from the last cruise, and a Norwegian lady named Randi, who I sang with in a ship’s choir sometime in the distant past. Dave and Ruth are two new faces I hadn’t met before.

This morning, we were introduced to the speakers currently onboard. Among them are several wildlife specialists and a forensic surgeon whose later career found him assisting with TV detective films. Another speaker, Arnie Skelton, from Manchester, also doubles as a barn dance caller, so a ceilidh is also on the programme. (Anyone know Arnie?)

Sunset Over the Solent

Later: We are now passing Brittany and entering the notorious Bay of Biscay. The sea is relatively calm but is forecast to gradually worsen, with force 7, near gale, expected tomorrow. Oh well, that’s life on the ocean waves.

We are due in the port at Lisbon around 6am on Thursday.

It’s pretty amazing, what you’re doing, and also amazing that the staff remember you ? But, you are a very memorable person. 4 months eh? I look forward to clicking on this link many times. I can’t quite make out the name of the ship … can you confirm?

      Hi Dave

Yes, it is amazing! I have to keep pinching myself to check that it is really happening.

The ship is called the Bolette. I believe it is named after Fred Olsen’s great grandmother.

        Hi Mary

Yes, the fog soon cleared and now the weather is good and calm. Although a bit cloudy, it’s 18 deg. We are 400 miles from the Canary Isles where it’s apparently 21 deg.
As you predicted, there are quite a few people here that I have met before. Do you remember Tony and Maggie? They send their regards. Also from our table in 2023 there’s Margaret, and even Robert.
A maître d’ who recognised me from 2025 came and spoke this morning and asked about ‘those two ladies’. Of course I immediately knew who he was referring to….
Some of the staff have amazing memories. Another stopped me last night and said he remembered me from a cruise Iris and I did in 2016! He was apparently our table waiter at that time.
Also, Paulo, our waiter from 2023 is here, and he still calls me ‘Sir Alan’!
