I have embarked on my journey around the world. The stresses of preparation, packing, and last-minute panics over what I might have forgotten are behind me. I’m in my cabin, comfortable and relaxed, with a tinge of excitement about the adventures that lie ahead.

After a few early delays yesterday due to slushy roads and minor flooding, the journey down to Southampton went very well, especially with the good company of my driver, who had a fascinating life story. I was then quickly processed through the port checks, accompanied by the delightful tunes of a three-piece group playing classics like “Over the Rainbow” and “Around the World in 80 Days,” bringing occasional smiles to the travel-weary faces.

I keep seeing familiar faces from previous cruises, giving the impression that they are permanently onboard (perhaps they are!). At my allocated dinner table for six, there’s Christine, who was on my table last time, Margaret, also from the last cruise, and a Norwegian lady named Randi, who I sang with in a ship’s choir sometime in the distant past. Dave and Ruth are two new faces I hadn’t met before.
This morning, we were introduced to the speakers currently onboard. Among them are several wildlife specialists and a forensic surgeon whose later career found him assisting with TV detective films. Another speaker, Arnie Skelton, from Manchester, also doubles as a barn dance caller, so a ceilidh is also on the programme. (Anyone know Arnie?)

Later: We are now passing Brittany and entering the notorious Bay of Biscay. The sea is relatively calm but is forecast to gradually worsen, with force 7, near gale, expected tomorrow. Oh well, that’s life on the ocean waves.
We are due in the port at Lisbon around 6am on Thursday.
